There are two main reasons why a donation may not have been matched:
- No match funding was available when you started your donation
When you begin making a donation, all of the charity’s available match funding may already be reserved for other donors.
If this happens, you will be shown a message explaining that there is currently no match funding available and asking whether you would still like to continue with an unmatched donation.
Your donation will still go to the charity, but it will not be doubled at that point. - Your match funding reservation expired
Big Give uses a reservation system for match funding.
If match funding is available when you begin your donation, the relevant amount is reserved for you for 25 minutes to give you time to complete your payment.
If the donation is not completed within 25 minutes, the reserved match funding is released and becomes available for other donors.
You will be shown messaging during the donation process to let you know whether your donation will be matched.
Can my donation be matched later?
Yes, potentially.
At the end of the campaign, if the charity has unused match funding remaining, Big Give will use this to retrospectively match eligible donations that were originally made without match funding.
This means an unmatched donation may still be doubled later if sufficient match funding remains available.
Can I get a refund and try donating again?
You can contact Big Give Support to request a refund if you would prefer to try making another donation while match funding is available.
However, we cannot guarantee that match funding will still be available when you make your new donation, as match funds are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
