The Big Give Emergency Nepal Appeal
The Big Give raised over £0.75 million in a week for victims of the Nepal earthquake through an online match funding campaign.
Supporters were given the opportunity to have their online donations doubled to raise funds for organisations who are responding to the devastation in Nepal, including Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), Care International and Oxfam. The match funding was provided by philanthropists including Sir Alec Reed, Michael Spencer’s city-firm ICAP, as well as many other individuals.
Over 6,000 people have responded and donated to the Nepal appeal on the match funding platform, thebiggive.org.uk.
Latest reports suggest over 7,000 people have been killed and millions more have been affected by the earthquake which struck Nepal on Saturday.
Alex Day, General Manager of the Big Give, commented: “We have been moved by the stories coming out of Nepal and we hope that our efforts over the past few days will support the fantastic organisations working so hard to bring relief to the victims of this tragedy. I want to extend a massive thank you to all of those who have donated and to our match funders who so generously offered to double online donations.”
One of the charities who benefited from the match funding appeal was the humanitarian organisation Medair who raised around £25,000 in total. “Funding raised through the Big Give will enable Medair to work closely with its partners to deliver shelter kits and essential items to people cut off in remote villages in Sindhupalchok, a district northeast of Kathmandu. According to reports, Sindhupalchok is one of the worst-hit districts affected by the earthquake” said Claire Casagrande, Development Manager at Medair UK.
