How to make a donation in the Summer Give 2018:
- Visit theBigGive.org.uk from 12pm (midday) on Monday 11th June to 12pm (midday) on Friday 15th June.
- Search for the charity projects participating in the Summer Give.
- Choose the project you want to give to and click the ‘Double Your Donation’ button.
- Follow the donation process and pay attention to messages regarding whether your donation will be doubled.
Key things to remember about donating in the Summer Give:
- Match funding for each charity is available on a first-come first served basis, so make your donation as soon possible when the campaign opens.
- Don’t pre-fill the donation page prior to 12pm as your donation won’t be matched.
- Make sure you have your credit/debit card and any 3D Secure information handy as the matching funds to double your donation will only be reserved for 10 minutes.
- Unmatched donations are still welcome once match funds have been exhausted and will still go towards the charity’s work. Furthermore, charities that exceed their targets will be entered into The Childhood Trust Summer Give Awards!

About the Summer Give
- What is the Summer Give?
The Summer Give 2018 is a campaign run in partnership with The Childhood Trust, focused on alleviating the impact of child poverty in London during the summer holidays. It is an online ‘double your donation’ campaign for charities that are supporting London’s poorest children during the school holidays. The match funding to double donations comes from two sources: Pledgers (charities’ own major donors) and The Childhood Trust.
- What is a project?
A project is a specific activity organised and delivered by a charity. Each participating charity selects one project for the Summer Give and it is only donations made to this project that can be matched during the campaign.
- Are the donations received restricted to the project selected for the Summer Give?
Yes. All online donations, pledges and Champion funds are restricted to the specific project which has been accepted into the Summer Give.

Making a donation
- When should I make my donation?
The Summer Give opens at 12pm (midday) on Monday 11th June and closes at 12pm (midday) on Friday 15th June. We recommend making your donation as soon possible when the campaign opens to ensure the highest chance of having your donation to your chosen charity doubled. If the match funds have run out you can still make an unmatched donation.
- Where should I make my online donation during the Summer Give?
To donate, simply click on the ‘Double your Donation’ button on your chosen charity’s project page. Please note that only online donations to charities participating in the Summer Give will be doubled. You will be able to browse through these charities on our homepage.
- What if I am donating from abroad?
As the Summer Give is hosted in the UK, all references to time are Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT. If you are donating from abroad, you will need to donate via the Big Give from midday GMT. You can check what time that is where you are by clicking here. You are able to donate from abroad as long as you have one of the accepted card types. These are Mastercard / Visa / Maestro / Switch / Solo / Delta / American Express.
- Will offline donations be doubled?
No, the Summer Give is an online match funding campaign. All donations during the Summer Give must be made online through the donation button on your chosen charity’s project page on thebiggive.org.uk, without exception. This is because we need to have a live record of donations in order to manage the various matching funds for the duration of the Summer Give and cannot, therefore, allow for offline donations.
- How much can I donate during the Summer Give?
You can make multiple matched donations of up to £5,000 per donation. Please note that the minimum online donation is £5.
- How will I know my donation has been successful?
Once you have made your online donation, you will be automatically directed to a thank you page with a receipt. Your receipt will show exactly how much of your donation was doubled and if Gift Aid was claimed. You will also receive an email thanking you for your donation. This automatic email may well find its way into your spam folder, so don’t forget to check there!
- What does it mean if my donation is ‘partially matched’?
‘Partially matched’ means that there were not enough match funds available to double your gift 100%.
- What payment methods are accepted?
Donations must be made online using a debit/credit card. The following card types are accepted:
Mastercard / Visa / Maestro / Switch / Solo / Delta / American Express
- Can I make an online donation from my CAF account?
No. At present, we are unable to accept online donations made via CAF accounts. Given the nature of the Summer Give, we need to have rapid confirmation that there are sufficient funds held in donors’ accounts and this confirmation can take several days from CAF.
- Can I make a donation from abroad?
Yes, so long as you have one of the accepted card types.
- When will the Summer Give close?
The Summer Give closes at midday on Friday 15th June.

- Will the charity be able to see my donation details?
When you make your donation you will be asked whether you would like to pass your contact details onto your charity. If you agree, the charity will receive your full contact details, if you choose not to, the charity will simply receive your name.
- Will the Big Give contact me?
When you make your donation you will be asked whether you would like to be kept up to date with the latest news from the Big Give. If you would like to receive updates, make sure the box is checked. If you do not check the box, you will not be contacted by us in the future. We’ll never sell your data and you can unsubscribe at any time. For more details see our Privacy Policy.
- What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a way for charities to increase the value of donations made to them by UK taxpayers. This is done by claiming back the basic rate tax paid by the donor and can increase the donation by a quarter at no cost to you, the donor.
- Can I claim Gift Aid on my online donation made during the Summer Give?
Yes. If you are eligible, you can claim Gift Aid on the donation itself, although the Gift Aid can only be claimed in relation to your actual donation, and not on the matched amount as well – you can read more about claiming Gift Aid on the HMRC website by clicking here. All Gift Aid claims are made on the charity’s behalf by our payments processor, Charity Checkout.
- Are there any fees?
There is a 4% processing fee charged on all gross donations (donation amount + Gift Aid) made via thebiggive.org.uk. You can read more about the fee and why it is charged here.
- Is it secure to make an online donation via the Big Give?
Yes. All of the online donations are processed securely by our payment processor, Charity Checkout, an award-winning social business and leader in online fundraising. Furthermore, your connection to the Big Give is encrypted so it is perfectly safe to donate via our systems. 3D Secure may also be incorporated by your card issuer to complete the donation process.

About the match funds
- Who is matching my donation?
Online donations will be matched using a combination of pledges from charities’ major donors and funds from The Childhood Trust.
- What happens when the matching funds run out?
You can keep donating to the charities involved in the Summer Give. Charities that exceed their targets will be entered into The Childhood Trust Summer Give Awards.
- Can I make a matched donation to a charity if I am one of their Summer Give Pledgers?
No. If you have already pledged to match online donations made to a given project, you are not permitted to make a matched donation as well because you would effectively be helping to match your own donation! However, you are welcome to give to any other project in the Summer Give.
- What happens if I don’t complete my donation in 10 minutes?
When the 10 minutes expire, the donor will be notified that their donation will no longer be matched. The donor will be given the option to restart the donation process or continue to make an unmatched donation. If the donation is not completed within 10 minutes, the reserved funds will revert to the matching pot, where they are then available for another donor to reserve.
