What is 3D secure?
3D Secure stands for Three Domain Secure – the payment industry’s internet authentication standard which has been developed by the major card schemes.
Visa have called their version of the scheme ‘Verified by Visa’ and MasterCard have called their equivalent initiative ‘MasterCard SecureCode’. These are both collectively referred to as 3D Secure.
Far from being something to worry about, the introduction of 3D Secure has resulted in a significant decrease in fraudulent card use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to enter a 3D Secure password if prompted?
A: This depends on your card issuer. Some give you up to three opportunities to carry on with the donation without entering a password (and after this you will be required to do so), but most will make you register your password immediately.
Q: What details do I require to register a 3D Secure password for the first time?
A: You will be requested to answer a number of security questions and enter a password which you will use for all future online transactions.
Q: Do all card issuers use 3D Secure?
A: Not all do. Only if your card issuer has signed up to the scheme will you be asked for a 3D Secure password.
