In times of overwhelming humanitarian disaster overseas, the DEC springs into action on behalf of our 15-member charities, raising funds quickly and efficiently and getting aid to where it is most needed.

2022 began with a continuation of the DEC Afghanistan Crisis Appeal, which we launched in December 2021 in response to rapidly deepening humanitarian needs in the country. The appeal has raised over £50 million, and funds are being used in Afghanistan to provide food and nutrition assistance, water and sanitation, health services, and livelihood support, including vital multi-purpose cash assistance. Our Phase 1 report (first 6 months) is accessible on our website.

Only a few months later, 2022 saw the DEC launch one of the biggest appeals ever – the generosity the UK public has shown to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has been astounding, raising over £390 million. DEC funds are being used in Ukraine and across the border in the neighbouring countries of Hungary, Poland, Moldova and Romania to meet the needs of all people fleeing with food, water, medical assistance, protection and trauma care. A long-term response plan has been developed so DEC funds can also help with rebuilding and resettlement. Our Initial Response report (first 3 months) is accessible on our website

Large-scale natural disasters can happen anytime, and the DEC is always ready to respond.

In September 2022, the DEC launched a third appeal, the DEC Pakistan Floods Appeal, as vast swathes of Pakistan were completely submerged in dangerous floodwaters. To date, this appeal has raised more than £42 million, and DEC funds are being used to support people with shelter, food, water, protection against water-borne disease and health services. DEC funds will also continue to support communities in Pakistan in the years to come. You can keep up with the latest updates on our live appeal page on our website.

Big Give raised in excess of £5.3 million for these disasters, making a huge contribution to effective humanitarian relief last year.

We’re so grateful to Big Give for their continued support. They have made a huge difference in ensuring we can continue our important work supporting those who need it most. So from all of us here at the Disasters Emergency Committee, thank you.
